The show is opened by the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. No surprises here other than Bray Wyatt returning from the Lake of Reincarnation to help Matt Hardy to win the match. This was a smart decision and it will progress Matt Hardy’s career to the next level as long as Vince isn’t behind the decision making here.
Cedric Alexander vs. Mustafa Ali for the Cruiserweight Championship
This match has had one of the best builds of any Wrestlemania match. Since a few weeks after the Royal Rumble 205 Live has been putting on a tournament for the title with some incredible matches. These two went to the finals. Mustafa Ali has a feel good coming from the bottom story and Alexander has been who they wanted to put the title on. This match put on some really cool spots like a Spanish Fly off the top rope by Ali and a couple really believable near falls. Cedric Alexander looks to have an insane drive and gets angrier as the match goes on. A lumbar check after some hard strikes ends the match. This is good, no stress wrestling from the WWE which has become rare lately. ****
The Wrestlemania Women’s Battle Royale has a lot more moments than the Andre. The women from NXT led by Peyton Royce show a lot of promise here. Banks and Bayley showdown and Bayley eliminated Banks. As everyone thinks Bayley has the win, Naomi pulls out a surprise victory.
The Miz vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor for the Intercontinental Championship
Seth Rollins entrance was incredible, his Game of Thrones graphics and attire and all 78,000 people yelling “Burn it Down”. It looks like WWE is going full speed ahead with Finn Balors LGBT thing which is awesome for the role model he will be but I hope it doesn’t affect his character. This match is a good showcase of all three men’s moves but it isn’t as good as the triple threat from RAW in 2017. This match spends a lot of time on the top rope as Rollins hits frog splashes, Miz hits superplexes and Balor hits a coup de grace. There are some very solid near falls and in the end, a curbstomp gets Rollins the victory. ****
Charlotte vs. Asuka for the SD Live Women’s Championship
Another amazing entrance, Charlotte came out with Gladiators dressed like a goddess. This match was crazy but I felt it was too short. Charlotte attempts a moonsault but is caught in a triangle by Asuka but Charlotte transitions it into a Boston crab. Asuka hits a suplex off the apron which makes Charlotte land hard. Asuka works the back of Charlotte throughout this match. Spanish Fly off the top rope by Charlotte that would be better if the Cruiserweights didn’t just do it. Brutal Spear by Charlotte for a near fall. Charlotte gets a Figure 8 for the victory. Asuka’s streak is actually over which is really crazy. I get that they are strapping the rocket to Charlotte for the possible Wrestlemania 35 main event against Ronda Rousey and I believe that this was absolutely the right way to do it. Two things didn’t go right though 1, This match was not good enough to be Asuka’s streak end and 2, Asuka tapped like a wimp. Build up Asuka instead of shooting her down. Speaking of breaking her down, Asuka grabs the mic and says that Charlotte is ready for Asuka. ***1/2
Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal vs. Rusev vs. Bobby Roode US Championship
Why did Rusev not win this, if the rumors are true that Rusev asked for his release he needed to win this. This was a short match with no good spots other than a couple RKOs from Orton. As it looks like Rusev is going to win, Singh gets on the apron allowing Mahal to hit the Khalas for the win. So not only did Rusev not win, he took the pin. **
Stephanie Mcmahon and Triple H vs. Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey
Let me say this before I start the review, this was the MOTN. Stephanie Mcmahon had a better Wrestlemania match then AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura, let that sink in. Rousey and Angle felt fresh and it was great to see both of them in the ring. WWE paid so much attention to making this feud good and they succeeded. Triple H and Stephanie played fantastic heels and Rousey was really, really good even getting her the MVP for the night even Kurt Angle held up. This match had some really believable near falls. The best part of this match though was Rousey taking out Triple H to cheers from the crowd. For Rousey, getting MOTN for Wrestlemania will be great for getting her momentum in her career and the hardcore fans behind her. ****1/2
Usos vs. The New Day vs. The Bludgeon Brothers
I don’t have very much to say here. It was a disappointment to me. I felt vibes from the Revival vs. DIY vs. Authors of Pain match last year from this feud. This was a squash match so those vibes weren’t lived up to. At least, WWE is finally pushing Luke Harper. **1/2
After running to the back earlier, John Cena comes back out for his match with Undertaker. Undertaker doesn’t come back but the lights go off and it’s Elias. Great heel move for Elias. Cena takes down Elias and walks up the ramp. The lights go off and the hat and jacket from WM 33 show up. Lightning strikes and Undertaker comes down. Then Undertaker squashes Cena. Well Ok. The only thing this tells me is that Undertaker isn’t over as a wrestler. He looked really good tonight and will have an official Ride into the Sunset.
Daniel Bryan and Shane Mcmahon vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
Daniel Bryan gets taken out early by an apron powerbomb. As soon as that happens, the match is slow. Kevin and Sami isolate Shane for a good ten minutes. This took a lot from a really exciting match. The Yes Terminator video package before the match was a great build up to see Bryan in the ring again. The fans were excited then he gets taken out of the match for a while. After a while, Bryan hits a super hot tag and hits all of his signature moves and then gets a Yes Lock for the win. ***1/2
Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax for the RAW Women’s Championship
This match felt great even though nothing really special happened. It broke the normal Bliss cycle that got annoying. Jax takes out Mickie James before the match. Bliss has to spend most of the match from the underdog position. Bliss works the leg of Nia Jax throughout. Bliss also hits a really cool Twisted Bliss to the outside. Slaps by Bliss fire up Jax to hit a Samoan Drop off the top rope to end Bliss’ reign. ***
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. AJ Styles for the WWE Championship
This match is very much like the Kenny Omega vs. Cody match but with a worse build up. The hype like Kenny vs. Cody was insane and it wasn’t lived up to. Especially here, after ONE Styles Clash, this match ended. While it lasted, it was a very solid striking and technical encounter. I’m really disappointed here but due to what happened after the match I don’t think it will be the last Styles vs. Nakamura match. After the match, Nakamura brings Styles his belt but low blows him officially turning heel. This was a good decision to create more heat for this match possibly down the line. ****
Braun and “Nicholas” his chosen partner who is the son of John Comb a referee squash the Bar for the tag titles.
Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship
We all knew this was the main event but we didn’t all know that it was going to SUCK. The crowd crapped on it with “This is Awful” chants and booing Roman Reigns hard. This was the formula of Spear kickout, F5 kickout, Superman punch vs. German Suplex. In fact, Lesnar hit 4 F5’s, Reigns hit 3 spears and Lesnar hit 7 german suplexes. This was a bad match that lasted way too long. The idea was okay for this match but it was not done right. The highlight of this match was Reigns dripping in blood after Lesnar’s spear making him look savage and motivated to win the title. I got vibes that Lesnar wasn’t supposed to win and the match changed on the fly due to the blood or Lesnar taking it for himself. Lesnar’s title reign needs to end. **
Last Word: One Word sums up this show, Disapointment. It seemed to have so much but it seemed to mess it all up. It was also very Unpredictable with Charlotte and Lesnar winning and Nicholas, I mean WTF. Cena vs. Undertaker was an unexpected squash, Nakamura vs. Styles got to be good but not great, Lesnar vs. Reigns was not only repetitive and annoying but no one in those 78,000 people wanted to see it and the chants showed that. Cena did some good character work, Rousey, and Angle vs. Steph and H was MOTN, it was great to see Daniel Bryan back and the IC triple threat was surprisingly great. I’m not saying it’s an overall bad Mania but it goes down as one of the worst ones in the 30s but it seemed to have so much to offer.
